The Host Family Programme

The Lycée Français d’Irlande offers secondary school pupils the opportunity to study in Ireland for a minimum of one year where their parents are living outside of Ireland.

We offer to find Irish families to host pupils for the school year on a paying basis.

The majority of our host families are based in the suburbs of South Dublin, a reasonable distance from the school.  They are families with children (mostly young children) and they offer lodging (on a full-board basis) in a single room.  More importantly, they agree to have no other French speaking student in their home at the same time.

Once contact has been established between your family and the host family, our service helps to ensure the smooth arrival and integration of the pupil into their host family and can, if necessary, offer support (non-academic) to the pupil throughout the school year.

The majority of pupils travel to school by bus, some by bike.  Journeys may be long and you should allow approximately 45 minutes for the journey.

We would strongly recommend cycling as the pupil’s means of transport (depending on the location of the host family home).

Mobile phone:  an Irish sim card can easily be purchased. Otherwise a new phone will cost in the region of €50 – with considerable credit offered free.

Flights: it is important to note that children under 16 may cannot check-in nor travel unaccompanied with Ryanair.  Unaccompanied minors can travel with Aer Lingus provided the necessary form, which can be found on the Aer Lingus website, has been completed. The majority of students use Aircoach to travel to and from Dublin Airport (www.aircoach.ie).

Your child must be in position of his/her European Health Insurance Card and we will accompany them to a doctor if necessary. You may in some circumstances have to pay for medical care and claim a reimbursement using the receipt.

The host family programme offers help in finding host families for pupils and can offer, if necessary, to mediate between you and the host family.  The host family programme does not deal with any academic issues.  These must be raised with the pupil’s class teacher.

We are available for general enquiries by phone (+353-87-258 3504) each weekday morning but also 24/7 in case of emergency.
